Nestled at the foot of Meilun Mountain in Hualien City, Pine Garden was built in 1942 as a military command post during the Japanese colonial era. The site commands a natural vantage point surrounded by a magnificent grove of century-old Ryukyu pines. Through high-definition 720-degree panoramic photography, we have digitally revitalized this weathered historic landmark. To prevent this historically weighty building from appearing overly somber, we insisted on shooting when sunlight poured in, hoping to infuse the tour with a positive warmth. With century-old pine branches swaying in the ocean breeze, conventional HDR compositing would produce ghosting at the frame edges. We therefore adopted the more demanding "DSLR bracketed exposure" approach, manually selecting and controlling light and shadow details to ensure every pine needle's sharpness and every architectural hue was perfectly preserved.Preserving Human Warmth: The Space-Time Puzzle of DSLR Panoramics
Rather than forcibly clearing all people from the frame, we deliberately retained a few visitors in the tour, giving this historic monument a touch of human presence. This is also a tremendous advantage of shooting panoramas with a DSLR — when one angle is crowded, we can pivot to capture other perspectives first, patiently waiting for the crowd to pass before filling in the remaining view. Through this jigsaw-puzzle-like patience across time and space, we captured the most natural, harmonious rhythm of the space.The Perfect Vantage Point: Recreating a Century of Expansive Views
Pine Garden once served as a military fortress with views stretching to the Ji'an South Airfield (now Zhika Xuan Park). To convey this sense of vastness, we carefully selected a prime hotspot on the wooden boardwalk along the park's east side, capturing Hualien's cityscape, the Pacific coastline, and a distant lighthouse all in one panoramic view.
